Reducing Disability in Alzheimer's Disease

RDAD-KC

Reducing Disability in Alzheimer's Disease (RDAD-KC) is a program designed to help alleviate caregiving stresses associated with providing care for someone with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. With in-home training and support services for caregivers, our goal is to provide caregivers with the knowledge to provide the best care possible and to improve the quality of the caregiver's relationship with the individual with dementia through increasing pleasant experiences. RDAD-KC also provides guidance in strength, flexibility, and balance exercises to help improve the individual with dementia's overall health.

Program Qualifications

Individuals with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia, or individuals with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD) with or at risk for dementia over the age of 40, who are unable to survive without at least some support, qualify for the RDAD-KC program. The program also requires for an individual to have a designated primary caregiver that would benefit from support services. The caregiver can be either formal (paid caregiver) or informal (spouse, child, family member, or friend).

Caregiver Supports

The RDAD-KC program uses a proven method of training to help caregivers overcome certain challenging situations that may be associated with changes in behavior due to Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. Through the RDAD-KC program, the Alzheimer's Specialist can provide the caregiver with education and information about the disease or can help to answer any questions the caregiver may have. Caregivers can work privately with an Alzheimer's Specialist in their home or at a location of their choosing.

Physical Therapy Session

Exercise Program

The exercise portion of the RDAD-KC program allows for the individual with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia and their caregiver to work one-on-one with an Alzheimer's Specialist to help improve strength, flexibility, and balance for the individual with dementia. The exercise program can be adapted to fit each individual's unique abilities and needs. The exercise portion can be conducted in the individual with dementia's home or the location of the individual with dementia or his or her caregiver's choosing.
